Day 7: Vintage Pilates photography - no Lycra, just short shorts.

The more observant amongst you may have noticed that the "30 Days" mentioned in the title have not, in fact, turned out to be strictly chronological so far. I'm not going to lie, this may continue. Every now and then we all have an evening where you urgently need to do three batches of experimental baking and two hours of trawling Pinterest.

Tonight has been one of those nights. The good news is that I am now full of ideas for wedding favours to be made for a wedding in six months' time, and have already started practising. You can see that this was an urgent task that absolutely had to be carried out tonight.

But it hasn't been an evening entirely devoid of Pilates. It has just taken a more visual form, due to the impossibility of doing the Hundred with a belly full of "misshapen" white chocolate truffles which weren't good enough to be presented to said bride for consideration.

It turns out Pinterest is also a source of incredible vintage Pilates photography. In the age before all images of Pilates being dominated by beaming women in Lycra, this was the acceptable face of Pilates. Ooh, those shorts.

Yes, that's good ol' Joe Pilates himself standing on a nice lady's belly.

Here he is again, doing some unspeakable dangerous looking things. Crazy times in his New York studio in the 1960, clearly.

The photo shoot I did with the talented David Farrow of The Avalon Photography for the pictures on my website was a pretty similar sketch, although we obviously had to go with the 'smiling woman in Lycra' style to be taken seriously in today's less circus-skills focused Pilates market. I know, health and safety gone mad.

This is one of my favourites from the shoot.

There are more vintage Pilates photos here: http://pinterest.com/emecrawley/pilates/. And possibly a few macaroon decorating ideas that may have ended up in the wrong place...
